What's the Buzz? for Early Learners: A complete social skills foundation course

For many, social thinking is hard-wired at birth and strengthens, quite naturally, through progressive experiences with others. However, for a variety of reasons, some children find it harder to think socially, develop socially and use their social tools suitably when it really counts.

What's the Buzz? for PRIMARY STUDENTS was originally released by Routledge in 2011 and became an international best-seller. It is now used by practitioners around the globe in many, many countries with children, helping them to successfully transfer these skills into their everyday lives.

What's the Buzz? for for EARLY LEARNERS is;

  • a simple, structured programme to teach EARLY LEARNERS (ages 4 to 7 years, although can be used successfully with older children displaying delayed social and emotional capacities)
  • designed to bring children together, including those who may be on the autistic spectrum
  • explicit by showing and practicing how children can get along with one another and nurture friendship
  • based on a developmental model to ensure relevance

By drawing on the modelling of targeted social skills, role play, explicit guidance, feedback and games, this resource is imaginative, very practical and is enhanced with visual materials and worksheets to accompany each lesson.

Information for EDUCATORS

What's the Buzz? Early Learners badge

Welcome to What's the Buzz? for Early Learners. It follows the same celebrated play-based and role-play format as its predecessor. It is built for teachers, school support workers, parents and care givers, as well as a range of allied health professionals.

Archie has an idea

Over 16 lessons, students become immersed in a variety of essential relational skills, stimulated by the experiences of our much loved character, Archie. In each lesson the children help Archie solve the very same social dilemmas that occur in their everyday lives. As they do this, through activity, discussion, role-play and quizzes, they'll learn how to become a better friend and a more flexible social thinker.

Collective research confirms that children who engage with peers, attach to them, and feel as though they have healthy relationships have a much greater chance of happiness and well-being as they grow. Without explicitly teaching children how to successfully connect and work with differences, we run the risk of some becoming discouraged, or worse. Sadly, when young human beings can't find a way to belong to peers a 'faulty logic' clicks in allowing them to believe that what they're doing is working, even though it is not - their thinking becomes stuck. Teaching social and emotional literacy with the same commitment and vigour we have traditionally taught academic skills increases a young person's confidence and competence to get along with others and embrace life.

Information for PARENTS

What's the Buzz? Early Learners badge

Together, Mark and Noni Le Messurier run What's the Buzz? children's groups from FULLARTON PARK CENTRE, 411 Fullarton Road, FULLARTON. The course runs for one semester (16 children sessions - 8 in each term). Sessions start at the beginning of term 1 and term 3.

The younger children engage in What's the Buzz? for EARLY LEARNERS, and the older children use What's the Buzz? for PRIMARY STUDENTS. We describe that What's the Buzz? as a friendship club where there are fun things to do, new kids to meet and the chance to learn some very special friendship skills.

Each group consists of 8 or 9 children. Children are selected based on age and developmental characteristics so everyone has the opportunity to learn relational skills and to build friendships in a safe, structured and an optimistic environment. Sessions are scheduled for 4pm and 5pm starts on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

There are 2 PARENT MEETINGS and these are held at 69 Goodwood Road, Wayville, 5034. These are in the evenings, one per term. If you wish additional feedback parents are encouraged to call so we can talk!

Beyond seeing students engage and absorb the new skills taught there are two bonuses that consistently emerge from the program. The first is witnessing warm interactions that blossom between participants and the formation of new friendships. Secondly, is seeing parents enjoying one another's company, exchanging thoughts and finding support in each other over coffee while children's sessions are in progress.
